Man shot dead near Portsmouth shopping center was suspect in 2021 shooting, police say

The man shot near a Portsmouth shopping center Monday may have been killed in an act of domestic retaliation, police said Tuesday.

Portsmouth Police Chief Renado Prince made the statement during a news conference addressing a bloody week in which 12 shootings occurred throughout the city.

Melvin Gregory Bynum, 45, of Portsmouth, was shot several times near the Green Clean Car Wash in the 4500 block of George Washington Highway. Dispatch said the call came in just after 5 p.m.

“His injuries proved fatal,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

“This is possibly a domestic retaliation act,” Prince said during Tuesday’s conference.

According to Prince, Bynum was a suspect in the shooting of two men nearly a year ago in the 300 block of Carver Circle.

Officers responded to the shooting incident around 1:25 a.m. on July 31, 2021. At the scene, they located two men with serious injuries. As a result of the investigation, Bynum was charged with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and four firearms charges. Portsmouth police had been searching for Bynum since he was charged on March 31, 2022.

While police have released a description of a vehicle driven by two armed men, suspects in the fatal shooting of Bynum have not been named.
